Personal History
Seth was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand. After living in Melbourne for 2 years he moved back to Auckland to study Osteopathy at Unitec. Upon completion of his Masters of Osteopathy he moved back to Melbourne to continue his osteopathic study and raise a young family. He now lives in Coburg with his partner and two beautiful children.
Training
Seth trained at Unitec in Auckland. After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Human Biology he successfully fulfilled the requirements for a Masters of Osteopathy.
Masters Research
As part of his training Seth was required to complete a research project examining osteopathic practice. Given the integral nature of touch to osteopathic diagnosis and treatment he decided to examine how touch is interpreted by patients of osteopathy. What he found was that for the participants in his study the experience of touch during an osteopathic session is one of care and security. For the participants touch plays a critical role in the therapeutic relationship by supporting and validating their experiences and by communicating practitioner humanism and professionalism.

Treatment Approach and Techniques used
Like all osteopaths Seth has a strong structural focus in his diagnosis and treatment. Seth firmly believes in the Ostepathic principles of structure governs function and the body has its own self healing mechanisms. What this means for your treatment is that he is interested in working out why your body is not getting better, and trying to address some of the underlying compensations to allow a more speedy and full recovery. This may mean, that he treats areas of your body which appear to be unrelated to your presenting complaint but are contributing to a pattern which is inhibiting your return to full health. Seth also believes that knowledge is power and thus wants you to understand what he is doing and how he believes this will help you.
Osteopathic techniques can be broadly categorised into direct and indirect techniques. Direct techniques such as soft tissue (massage) or manipulation ("clicking") are an attempt by the practitioner to encourage tissues to change their shape or position by gentle application of force. In contrast indirect techniques such as balanced ligamentous tension (BLT) or cranial techniques try to work with the body through balancing different tissues to improve the way that it is moving. In other words, direct techniques are concerned with structure while indirect techniques are concerned with function.
Seth uses a wide range of osteopathic techniques from direct manipulative work right through to cranial techniques depending on the client and the presenting condition.
Interests
Seth also practices pilates every week and is keenly interested in how pilates works with Osteopathy in rehabilitative settings. Consequently, he works closely with pilates instructors to integrate a client’s rehabilitation and treatment. He also has close ties with a Yoga studio and enjoys the challenge of treating individuals who are exploring their body’s limits and capabilities.
Professional Development
Continuing professional development (CPD) is required for both registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA) as well as membership of the Australian Osteopathic Association.
In addition Seth is regularly updating his skills and knowledge with both accredited courses as well as private study.
